SF Bay Area Effective Altruism aims to be impactful, respectful, empowering, safe, and friendly.
Everyone who engages or participates in the spaces we manage agrees to follow this Code of Conduct. That includes all events or programs hosted by SF Bay Area EA, East Bay EA, San Francisco EA, and South Bay EA, as well as the virtual platforms we manage. It applies to attendees, speakers, organizers, volunteers, and participants.
We understand that many interpersonal situations may be complex, and may reference behavior that occurs elsewhere. We have the right to limit an individual’s engagement in our official events at our judgement.
Norms
Be kind. Treat others with respect. If you can, please give each other the benefit of explaining behavior you find unwelcome or offensive. If someone communicates they aren’t happy with your behavior, please stop the behavior even if you don’t understand the reasons.
Reporting an incident
If you have experienced inappropriate behavior or harassment, have witnessed it happening to someone else, or have heard concerning rumors, we request that you please share the situation. There are several ways you can do so:
Submit through our anonymous feedback form, which will be reviewed by Allison Agnello.
Email SF Bay Area EA organizers at info@sfbayea.org.
We take anonymity seriously and will respect any level of privacy the person reporting would like.
We commit to following up within 3 business days. Situations can often be very complex, and we will work to address each submission. If there is an emergency or you have witnessed/experienced criminal activity, please contact the police.
Warning flags can help us identify and address ongoing or potential issues. If you have doubts about whether something you saw or went through counts as harassment, we still encourage you to report it.
Inappropriate behavior, including harassment, can include:
Sexually explicit or suggestive comments
Offensive verbal language
Posting inappropriate content on our platforms
Disruption to events
Deliberate intimidation
Stalking
Inappropriate physical contact
Unwelcome sexual advances
Other behavior that the organizers find to be inappropriate or harassment
If a participant engages in unacceptable behavior, the event organizers may take any action they see as appropriate, including warning the offender or asking them to leave the event. In extreme cases, we may decide it is in the best interest of our community to prohibit individuals.
Photographs and Videos
We will announce beforehand if we take photos or videos at SF Bay Area EA events. You may choose not to be photographed or have your image shared publicly. Please let the event organizers know if you have any questions or concerns.
By attending an event or engaging with the community, you are agreeing to abide by the Code of Conduct.
If you have any questions about the Code of Conduct, you can contact us at info@sfbayea.org.
About SF Bay Area EA
As of January 2024, our organization is a volunteer-based group with no paid staff. Due to limited resources and capacity, there may be occasional delays and constraints in our responses. We care about the community and will try to avoid these issues. Your patience and understanding is appreciated.
